A landmark collaboration that will build new technologies to record the history of cells over time

The Brotman Baty Institute operationalizes and administers the University of Washington (UW) portion of the SeaHub project, and provides single-cell sequencing support to SeaHub teams in the Shendure, Trapnell, Pepper, Pinglay and Hamazaki labs at UW.


The Brotman Baty Institute for Precision Medicine, or BBI, was founded in November 2017 by UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and Seattle Children’s. Led by Scientific Director Dr. Jay Shendure, the BBI has built the infrastructure to enable launch of large, collaborative projects in the space of genomics and precision medicine.

The Brotman Baty Institute also hosts a single cell sequencing platform through its Advanced Technology Lab. The Single Cell Genomics Group consists of a team of scientists seasoned in high-throughput -omics techniques who are committed to optimizing and tailoring combinatorial indexing methods to meet the goals of large-scale collaborative projects such as SeaHub.


The overarching goal of the BBI Team is to provide the single-cell expertise to enable the systematic mapping of the conserved genetic program controlling vertebrate embryogenesis by disrupting genes and pathways in developmental models.

Produce a reference atlas across vertebrates

  • Generate time-resolved transcriptomic and epigenomic atlas of zebrafish development from 6 hours post-fertilization to 28 days post-fertilization
  • Generate time-resolved transcriptomic atlases of human and mouse gastrulation models from 0-120 hours.

Produce a perturbation atlas across vertebrates

  • Transcriptionally profile at least 5M single cells from thousands of zebrafish embryos and mouse and human gastruloids that have been treated with small molecule, chemical inhibitors
  • Transcriptionally profile at least 20M single cells from thousands of zebrafish embryos and mouse and human gastruloids that have been genetically perturbed at strategically selected loci.
